Rosatomflot signs deal on 5th, 6th series of nuclear icebreakers
MURMANSK, Feb 3 (PRIME) -- Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom’s subsidiary Rosatomflot, operating a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers, and Baltic Shipyard, part of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), have signed a deal to build the 5th and the 6th series of multipurpose nuclear icebreakers of the 22220 project, Rosatomflot said on Friday.
“Further construction of a series of multipurpose nuclear icebreakers is a key element of comprehensive development of Russia’s Arctic zone. Despite the external factors, we are implementing the plan to increase the cargo loading of the Northern Sea Route,” the company quoted acting CEO Leonid Irlits as saying in a statement.
The construction of the 5th and the 6th series of icebreakers will be financed by the government and by Rosatomflot on a parity basis.
The 5th series is to be commissioned in December 2028, and the sixth series in December 2030.
